I’m trembling now, my body alive with want, my mind a mess of duty and desire. Nash’s deal would save everything—the trailer, the ranch, the kids’ future. But Boone’s touch, his words, they’re unraveling me, making me want things I can’t have. Like him, all of him, right here, right now.

“Enough!” I yank my wrist free, stepping back, my chest heaving. Both men freeze, eyes locked on me.

“I ain’t nobody’s prize to be fought over,” I snap, but my voice shakes, and I’m not sure I believe it.

Boone’s smirk softens, just a fraction, but his eyes don’t leave mine. “We’ll see about that,” he says, low and sure, like a promise carved in stone.

Nash scoffs, but there’s a nervous edge to it. “You’re making a mistake, Callie,” he says, adjusting his jacket. “Don’t forget what’s at stake.”

He storms out, the bell jangling like a gunshot, and I’m left alone with Boone. His hand finds my waist again, gentle this time, but firm enough to make my knees buckle.

“You don’t need him,” he says, his thumb brushing my hipbone, sending sparks straight to my core. “I’ll fix this. But you gotta trust me.”

I want to. God, I want to. But trust is a luxury I can’t afford, not when Ellie and Roy are counting on me.

“Why, Boone?” I whisper, searching his face. “Why do you care?”

His eyes darken, and he leans closer, so close I can taste the whiskey on his breath.

“Because you’re mine, Callie. And I protect what’s mine.”

Before I can answer, he pulls back, tipping his Stetson like nothing happened, and strides out, leaving me breathless and aching. I sink against the counter, my body humming, my mind screaming one thing:
